Learn More About Thunderstorms

---
Thunderstorms are common in midwest Georgia. Statewide, a thunderstorm will occur about 50 days each year. Thunderstorms can occur at any time, but are most likely to occur in the afternoon and evening hours in the spring and summer. Some of these storms can grow to the point of becoming a severe thunderstorm. These are storms that produce wind gusts of more than 57 MPH, or have hail the size of dimes or larger. The straight-line winds in a thunderstorm can exceed 100 mph and can be as damaging as a tornado.

Protect Yourself
When a thunderstorm occurs:
  • Monitor weather reports. Postpone outdoor activity if a thunderstorm is imminent.

  • If you're caught outside, take shelter in a building or hardtop vehicle (if you use a vehicle for shelter, be alert to the risk of tornadoes). Do not take shelter under isolated trees, in sheds, or in a convertible vehicle.

  • Stay away from objects that conduct electricity. These include telephone lines, power lines, metal pipes, and metal fences. Avoid using the telephone or other electrical appliances.

  • Be aware of the risk for lightning, hail, and tornadoes (see related sections below for more information).
